Esteurope, a Hospital Centre in Izmir, Turkey with its own state-of-the-art dental clinic, looks at how Emax crowns are used in aesthetic dentistry and how they differ from zirconium crowns.
Emax is a kind of ceramic based on lithium disilicate glass. The material has the translucency of natural teeth, as well as being strong and durable. An Emax crown is made and applied from a single block of of lithium disilicate, which is what makes its so strong.
Emax crowns can be used to restore stained, crooked, fractured and root canal treated teeth, usually in the front of the mouth. They are also a good choice for single or short-span bridges.
Zirconium and Emax crowns are both types of all-ceramic crowns used in aesthetic dentistry. Emax crowns pass more light than zirconium crowns, and this translucency makes them the best choice where a natural and aesthetic appearance is the most important factor.
Zirconium crowns are more durable than Emax crowns, and therefore last longer. In patients with multiple missing teeth, emax crowns are not the preferred choice because of their relative fragility. In these situations, zirconium bridges are used instead.
Porcelain bridges with a metal support contain a grey metal alloy that can dissolve and discolour the gingival area. The underlying metal structure also decreases the light transmission of the porcelain, giving the coating a dull and matt appearance. This is the reason that zirconium and Emax based bridges have become the aesthetic treatment of choice in recent years; the translucency of full porcelain coatings is very close to natural teeth.
The first stage of creating an Emax crown is to remove a layer of the natural tooth so that the crown can be fitted on top. A digital impression is then made and transmitted to a computer that controls the CAD/CAM milling procedure. Once the dentist has matched the shade of the crown with the patient’s natural teeth, the milling machine cuts the block of lithium disilicate to the required shape. The dentist then makes any fine adjustments and glues the crown to the tooth.
As well as creating single all-ceramic crowns, the Emax system can be used to make veneers, inlays, onlays and short-span bridges.
The maintenance regime for teeth coated with Emax is exactly the same as that for natural teeth. Routine maintenance should be performed using toothpaste and a toothbrush. It is important that annual dental checks are not neglected.
