Medical tourism now accounts for around five per cent of international tourism, and Yemen is one of the latest countries attempting to develop this sector.
The nation benefits from good medical care and a range of ecotourism attractions which are key for bringing visitors into the country, and it is now developing Damt as its first medical tourism destination.
The city boasts fine weather, important historical sites, and an abundance of natural mineral water which experts believe may have medicinal properties.
Mutaher Taqi, chairman of the General Authority for Tourism Development, told the Yemen Times that developing tourism is a prime objective for the authority.
"It seeks to set the proper conditions to develop Yemeni tourist sites, as well as encourage investment in this regard to help establish Yemen's tourism industry, which will assist the nation's economic progress, giving priority to those areas able to draw more tourists," he explained.
Visitors travelling for treatment abroad tend to spend longer in a country than regular tourists, making it a good way for nations to show off their main attractions and optimise returns from tourism
