Gynecomastia is the medical term for “male breast enlargement”, a common condition which may involve an excess of glandular tissue, fatty tissue, or both (baaps.org.uk). Teenage boys will generally experience a degree of breast enlargement during puberty which usually resolves once hormone levels become more stable (dbs.nhs.uk); incidence rises again later in life with age, affecting approximately 30% of older men, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. This may cause tenderness and pain as well as embarrassment, with many men reporting that gynecomastia inhibits them from engaging in sports/exercise, sexual activity, and from wearing clothing that may reveal their shape.
For many men, cosmetic surgery is the treatment of choice (after a medical examination has ruled out the possibility of rare underlying disorders/disease). If the excess tissue is mostly soft and fatty, then liposuction can be used to remove the tissue from a small tube; alternatively, if the tissue is glandular and firm it may need to be cut out with a scalpel (baaps.org.uk). After either procedure, patients will be instructed to wear a compression garment continuously for a period of weeks to reduce the swelling and bruising and aid in post surgery healing.
