The gastric balloon has emerged as a popular form of obesity treatment in India, it has been revealed.
According to surgeons, the gastric balloon is particularly popular among overseas patients who are keen to travel to India for treatment abroad.
The procedure involves placing an inflatable balloon in the stomach to give the patient a sense of fullness, or 'satiety', after eating far less than usual.
The balloon is inserted endoscopically via the mouth and oesophagus and then inflated once inside the stomach.
According to forerunnershealthcare.com, the procedure is not a permanent answer to obesity but can provide a short- to medium-term solution for patients who are struggling to lose a significant amount of weight.
It can also be a useful technique to help severely obese patients lose enough weight to allow them to safely undergo a more invasive form of obesity surgery, such as gastric bypass or gastric band surgery.
