The Republic of Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe located between Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Moldova is a small country of approximately 13,000 square miles (about one seventh the size of the UK) and has a population in the region of three and a half million.
Following a decline in standards following the collapse of the Soviet Union, health care reforms were launched by the Government of Moldova in 2004. These included the creation of a national health insurance scheme and a different way of financing the entire sector.
