Advantages of opting for a hotel with a spa!

25-Apr-2024

Here are some of the advantages of opting for a hotel with a spa: WTT's partner, the 4-star Your Hotel and Spa Alcobaça, with the Termas da Piedade is the ideal choice for taking a break from the stress of everyday life.

The 4 star Hotel, Your Hotel and Spa Alcobaça, with Termas da Piedade, offer a range of thermal water treatments for the prevention and treatment of various pathologies and can help in this regard!

The waters of “Your Hotel and Spa Alcobaça” have the following Therapeutic Indications: Digestive system, skin, rheumatic and musculoskeletal. With the Benefits of Water: Hypersaline and with Ionic Composition: Sodium Chloride.

How Your Hotel and Spa Alcobaça started, with Termas da Piedade

The healing properties of the thermal waters of Piedade are very old and were already recognized in Roman times. In the Middle Ages, the Cistercian monks, lords of the neighboring Monastery of Alcobaça, built the first spa on this site, making it possible for those in need to enjoy it. In 1566, Cardinal Henry, the future king, founded a convent of Arrábidos monks in the parish of Vestiaria.

A few years passed before the monks realized the potential of the local thermal waters. Next to the spring, they built a house to shelter the sick, where water in pools was used to cure some illnesses, and a chapel invoking (Nossa Senhora da Piedade) Our Lady of Mercy. The name “Piedade” comes from this chapel, built in 1628. Previously, the thermal waters were called Almoínhas or the waters of Várzea da Maiorga and Fervença. The hermitage, of which no traces remain, would have been located on the land where the Thermal Baths stand today.

The Cistercian monks took over the operation of the thermal baths at Piedade and built the first thermal establishment, which was still very rudimentary, consisting only of a house and some tubs for immersion baths. Inside the buvette of the Termas da Piedade you can see a tile panel depicting the Monastery of Alcobaça. At this time, according to some authors, around 2,000 people were bathing here every year.

“It has no competition in Portugal”

Chemist Charles Lepierre carried out a chemical analysis of mineral water in 1928, concluding that it was highly radioactive and did not change over time. The specialist (after whom Lisbon’s Lycée Français is named) guaranteed that it was a water of “a particular type that cannot be confused with similar waters. “It has no competitors in Portugal” and recommended using the water on an empty stomach in cases of “obstipation “ladies’ diseases” and skin diseases and ulcers. The water was drunk and applied in enemas, irrigations and baths. The extensive work on the spa was completed in the 50s. The new projects increase Piedade’s visibility and notoriety. These included the Hotel, which inaugurated in 1953. With 108 rooms at the time, it was owned by the family of Dr. Lameiras (a doctor and owner of the spa).

Since 2007, a huge investment has been made in the total refurbishment of the hotel and the creation of the spa, thus giving the hotel its new name: Your Hotel Spa, 4 stars. After 20 years of new catchments, tests, analyses and a lot of effort, in 2019 the spa service was reopened to the public, with the quality of the water guaranteed by a new borehole. Today, Termas da Piedade is a national reference in thermalism, with facilities and treatments of recognized quality, especially recommended for the digestive system, musculoskeletal system, urinary system and dermatological valences due to the characteristics of its waters.

Therefore, at Termas da Piedade By Your Hotel & Spa Alcobaça you will find a place of refuge and tranquillity, which combines the balance of the surrounding nature with the comfort of a modern unit, providing a unique experience in the region.
