Recurrent Miscarriages Unit offers hope

27-Jul-2021

Institut Marquès, an internationally-recognised IVF clinic in Barcelona, looks at how recurrent miscarriage need not be the end of the dream of starting a family.

Approximately 15% of pregnancies end in miscarriage before the ninth week of pregnancy. Recurrent miscarriages occur when two or more pregnancies fail to progress.

Each miscarriage increases the likelihood of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies, as it indicates a common cause: the risk of recurrent miscarriage is 25% with 2 previous consecutive miscarriages, 45% with 3 previous consecutive miscarriages and 54% with 4 previous consecutive miscarriages.

It is higher if Antiphospholipid Syndrome is diagnosed and it is lower if the cause is advanced maternal age and the next pregnancy happens after the transfer of a chromosomally analysed embryo.

Institut Marquès in Barcelona has a Unit specialising in Recurrent Miscarriages. Dealing with cases involving genetic alterations, autoimmune disorders, hereditary coagulation disorders or alterations in the uterus, the Unit offers personalised treatment designed to help each patient achieve their dream of starting a family.

In the past 10 years, Institut Marquès has made enormous progress in the diagnosis of recurrent miscarriages of embryonic origin. The great challenge lies in improving the diagnosis of recurrent miscarriage of maternal origin. This remains their research challenge. The fact that in many cases the cause is unknown and the subsequent pregnancy develops normally has led to all kinds of diagnoses and treatments.
