Patients who watch the development of their embryos have higher pregnancy rates

30-May-2019

Taking part actively in the assisted reproduction process is one of the main motivations of future parents. The possibility of getting involved in the process makes them feel that they can really do something to improve the pregnancy rate. And, in fact, it is exactly like that, as a study presented by Institut Marquès at the 2019 National Congress of the Italian Society for Fertility, Sterility and Reproductive Medicine (SIFES) that has been held at the Italian town of Riccione, has shown. "For the first time we have found something that can help the patient improve her pregnancy rates in IVF treatments", states Dr Marisa López-Teijón, Institut Marquès’ Director.

Emotional connection

The study unveils that watching the embryos using the Embryomobile increases up to 11% the pregnancy rates in patients that have undergone an IVF cycle and an embryo transfer. Rates increase in direct proportion to the number of times they connected to watch them.

For the first time a study shows the impact of emotions on the results of assisted reproduction treatments. The 936 participants in the study were distributed in 5 groups, according to the total number of visualisations (from 0 to over 30). It was observed that as the amount of times that they watched their embryos increased, the pregnancy rate increased as well. Specifically, they reached a 72.3% in those patients that exceeded 30 visualisations versus 61% among those who did not monitor their embryos at all. The improvement of the receptivity of the uterus could be explained by the emotional connection of a woman with her embryos if she can see them daily before implantation.

A transparency exercise

For years, Institut Marquès has been offering all its patients the possibility of watching the evolution of their embryos through their mobile devices, in real time and 24/7, thanks to the Embryomobile. In an exercise of transparency, this innovative application allows patients to observe their own embryos while they are developing inside the Embryoscope incubator.

Monitoring can be done from home or from anywhere, as do the embryologists themselves, from the time of fertilisation to the transfer to the maternal womb five days later.
