Knowing that I would need extensive – and probably expensive – treatment to replace a number of lost teeth, I set out to get numerous quotations to assess the next step. I went to a dental radiography unit to get X-ray images to send to selected overseas clinics offering dental tourism. Additionally, I attended clinics in Spain and Portugal to establish whether an overseas trip was really necessary. As the quotations came in from Spain and Portugal, ranging from 6,000 to 11,000 euros for similar treatment, the investigation of overseas options became more attractive. The investigation was based on destinations accessible from my local airport of Faro, including Italy, France, The Canary Islands, and the UK. Only dental clinics in Croatia and the Canaries made contact by phone to check out what I really needed. All the other clinics sent quotations, again ranging widely but not that much less than those obtained in Spain and Portugal. Ivan Habijanec from H-dent in Rovinj, Croatia, came up with a solution at 2,700 euros that met my needs at less than half the cost of the next lowest quote. He sealed the deal by offering free accommodation for the 5 days that I would need to be available. The total of airfares and car hire came to 240 euros. On this occasion, I went on my own, but if I need to go back for further treatment, I would certainly take my wife, as the whole experience may be enjoyed as a holiday break.
