Sucessful donor IVF treatment in Spain

Treatment: Blastocyst Embryo Transfer
Provider: Centro de Reproducción Asistida de Marbella (CERAM)
Date: Feb 2014

When my husband and I found out we could not have children of our own we were, of course, devastated. However, we very quickly agreed that we wanted a family, and we didn’t much care how that was achieved. As the fertility problems were on both sides the only options open to us were donor IVF (both egg and sperm) or adoption. Although ultimately either of those options would have given us the family we so desperately wanted, I felt the need to carry a child and wanted to explore the donor IVF option first. In the UK, egg donation alone is quite difficult, with long waiting lists translating to waiting times of a year or more. Using both egg and sperm donors is practically unheard of. For this reason we decided to look outside of the UK for a suitable clinic who could offer the treatment we needed. Due to my colouring, Spain was an obvious choice.

I'd like to take the credit for finding CERAM, but in actual fact it was my sister, who was researching treatments for herself. We both chose CERAM over all of the other available clinics as it appeared to be small enough to offer a more personal experience but still had remarkable success rates. The extra comfort factor for us was the availability of an English coordinator.

We approached CERAM in September and were pleasantly surprised that a donor was identified within a month, with treatment scheduled for the following January. The process was so quick we were both amazed and delighted.
The timing meant that my treatment schedule crossed both Christmas and New Year holidays, however both CERAM and my consultant in the UK were hugely accommodating and I even had a blood test, results and response to results on New Year's Day. Any concerns I had were always answered quickly, with tweaks to the plan if necessary and words of reassurance, making the experience far less stressful than it would otherwise have been. This level of service continued throughout the process and once we were in Marbella we were updated daily as to the status of our embryos.

The staff at CERAM, from Fiona, the co-ordinator to the embryologists and Dr. Benito himself were all extremely welcoming and made us feel very well looked after. We couldn't have asked for a better or more personal experience. Both during and after the blastocyst transfer it was clear that Dr. Benito was a skilled and experienced fertility expert. The attention to detail was exceptional and I felt in very good hands. I followed the instructions he and Fiona gave me for post transfer to the letter.
We were rewarded with a positive pregnancy test, and later that year a beautiful baby boy – who I still look at with awe and feel exceptionally lucky to have. Shortly after having my son, I went into full ovarian failure – a very unwelcome and early menopause. Still, I couldn't fight off the urge to have another child. I didn't think this would be possible given the circumstances, but CERAM assured me that it did not preclude me from trying again, just a different treatment regime would be necessary.

So, in May of this year we embarked on another fresh cycle. It didn't work initially, however we were lucky enough to have 4 frozen embryos and were successful with a frozen cycle. We are expecting a little girl in April and are ecstatically happy. I can't begin to say how grateful we are to the whole team at CERAM. They have given us the family we always wanted – and a nephew and niece too!!!!! We couldn't feel more lucky. I'm so glad we chose CERAM. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
