“We believe in you, ISIDA!”

The following is adapted from a letter received by ISIDA clinic from a patient who made the journey from Venice to Ukraine for fertility treatment.  It is one more challenging story with a happy ending, one more story that brings hope and belief in miracles.

M., tell us about your long-awaited motherhood - what do you feel now?

I want to talk about the most important thing, the result: our family has a daughter Leda, who is now just over a year old. She’s an amazing, bright person! All the so-called disadvantages, which to some extent new parents experience - sleepless nights, lack of time for themselves, anxiety and fears for the baby – all dissolve in her smile, look, laughter and voice, when she pronounces the long-awaited words: “mum” and “dad”.

One can tell – you love her very much.

The ancient Greeks distinguished three types of love denoted by three different words. The Russian, Ukrainian and Italian languages have only one word expressing this feeling, but the feeling that motherhood brings is something special and I am thankful to ISIDA Clinic for it, especially our guardian angels – the doctors, because without them none of this would have happened!

What brought you to Kiev, to ISIDA, as Venice is a fair way from here?

I do not have the exact answer to this question, because we did not follow anyone’s recommendations. Me, living abroad for 20 years, and my husband, who was born and raised in Venice, we had some doubts. Before ISIDA, we had walked a very long and very difficult path. Four premature pregnancies over three years, endless tests, medical procedures, consultations with various specialists, operations... All these bursts of joy from another positive test and then the bitter disappointment of losing the pregnancy were difficult to endure. We consulted leading clinics in Italy and travelled to one of Europe’s most “high-profile” reproductive clinics in Barcelona, Spain - And nothing. By the time we arrived at ISIDA, I was at rock bottom, but somewhere inside of me the hope of becoming a mother was still smoldering. My husband, by virtue of his inexhaustible optimism, supported me and did not allow me to give up.

Consequently, you were not 100% sure of your course?

Actually, we arrived in Kiev with the addresses of three different clinics - and I scheduled a counselling interview with all three of them. The first was ISIDA, a meeting with Viktor Mikhailovich. I want to say that as soon as we entered the hospital, it felt like home. Absolutely everyone was friendly and sincere! We could not help but be struck by the beautifully decorated, comfortable, sparkling clean building and the efficient and professional staff.  After an hour’s conversation with the doctor, I already knew: we were in the right place, we could get help here!

In your opinion, what was the key to the success of your pregnancy?

I am an operating theatre nurse by profession and throughout the years, I have learned an important truth: a patient’s trust in their doctor is one of the most powerful medicines. No wonder they say that a disease always involves three people: the patient, the doctor and the medical problem itself. And two elements of the relationship always work together, either the patient and the disease against the doctor, or the patient and the doctor against the disease. I know for sure that the patient’s contact with the doctor, and belief in the result, work wonders! This is especially true in such a delicate and miraculous undertaking as the conception and birth of a child.

When we met with the doctors at ISIDA clinic, I realised that we could make it! We did not even go to the counselling interviews at the two other clinics.  With our minds at ease, in a couple of months we returned to ISIDA for treatment – and it worked!

Do you think this was a happy twist of fate?

I do not know yet what brought us to ISIDA. I rather believe that my heart led me here. Our prayers, belief in a miracle, our guardian angel... and also an unquenchable desire to see our little daughter be born! Nevertheless, we are very grateful to ISIDA for this great happiness, privilege and responsibility of being parents. Sometime soon, we will definitely return to this beautiful clinic for another miracle!
