IVF Treatments in Turkey

5-May-2011

Turkey is known as the meeting point of the West and the East. Back 20 years ago, Turkey had a closed economy and was not really a country of which people had a high opinion of. After the liberazation of its economy in the late 80’s, Turkey has started to show its powerful potential with its 70 million citizens inside and another 5 million citizens in West Europe such as in Germany. Not to forget that with other Turkic countries such as Azerbaijcan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, etc and with its cultural ties both with the Islamic World and the European World, Turkey can definitely be the leader of the Region in the near future. Turkish economy has been growing rapidly and GDP per capita has been increasing.

One of the most important sectors of Turkey is the Tourism. Every year millions of people visit Turkey for its Historical places. Needless to say, Istanbul , the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire and then the Ottoman Empire ,comes to the mind . Istanbul today is a lovely metropolitan city with very old and very new structures along the famous Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. People can visit mosques, churches, palaces of the Roman Empire and the Ottoman Empire and see how two civizilations lived peacefully on this soil. But majority of the tourists like to visit Turkey’s crystal clear beaches, luxurious resorts on the West and the South during the summer. Especially Germans, Britons and Russions choose Turkey for its economical but luxurious holiday options. In the recent years, SPA’s have been added to these luxurious resorts to provide more comfort and unforgettable time.

The trend that started with the establishment of the SPA’s awakened the medical providers especially in the fields of plastic surgery and dentistry. Medical Tourism started to become famous in Turkey and medical providers in other fields have also entered the market. Jinemed Hospital in Istanbul, founded by American Board certified Turkish Doctors in 1989 is one of the most popular IVF Centers of Turkey which established an International Department in 2005 to promote its services to the Western and the Eastern World. Turkey overall has 100 IVF Centers and performs over 40.000 cyles per year , providing one of the biggest volume in the World. Especially after the liberation of the economy in the 80’s, many Turkish doctors who studied abroad come back to Turkey and contributed to the progress of the medical sector.

It is not only this experience nor the holiday aspects that take the attention of the foreigners who are interested in the IVF treatment, but also the low costs, flexibity of the lows, and of course the turkish hospitality in the service.

Costs are of course a determining point. Most of the patients of Jinemed come from the UK, Germany and the USA. In the UK, the NHS system has been unpopular in the recent years with its waiting lines, and lack of quality of the service. Although the system still pays for the IVF services, people need to wait for several years to get accepted. Since women get married later, their conception plans are also delayed to the mid 30’s where the biology starts to become an obstacle for conceiving a child via natural ways. At this stage, if you also add the waiting time of the NHS, British Women have to delay and delay their conception plans which result in a lead to the private sector. However, the private sector in England is almost combined with the NHS system. Same doctors see the patients at the same facilities but the only difference seems to be the payment of money. We also hear from many patients that doctors usually give the jobs to the nurses to explain to the patients whats going on during the treatment. From our experience at Jinemed in Turkey this is not really favoured by the patients. At Jinemed patients can reach the doctors very easily. Of course there are very good private IVF Centers in England such as Bournhall which are worldwide-known, however these centers turn out to be expensive. People do know that IVF treatment can be tried several times in order to be successful.Only 1 IVF cycle can cost almost 5000-6000 British Pounds in England and 15.000- 20.000 USD in the US when people visit these world-known clinics. In Turkey, Jinemed is one of the top private clinics in IVF and only charges upto 2300 British Pounds for its IVF service. With hotel accomodation, airfares , food and daily expenses total comes to 3500 GBP max.

If you think that a person will have a successful pregnancy and delivery on the third cycle, financial difference speaks for its self.

But this is not the only advantage that Turkey offers!

Many Turkish Clinics like Jinemed do offer alternate IVF techniques such as ICSI ( Microinjection) and blastocyst transfer ( 5th day embryo transfer), assisted hatching for free of charge just to increase the success rates. But in England and other countries these tecnhiques are usually extra costs. With such advantages, Jinemed was able to treat about 1000 IVF patients only from England since its start in late 2005.
