People who are considering seeking dentistry abroad must do their research first to avoid problems, the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) has advised.
Market research by Mintel shows that the amount of money spent on cosmetic dentistry in the UK has soared from £210 million in 2005 to £627 million in 2007.
A recent BACD survey found that over a quarter of the population has had cosmetic dental treatments, and recent trends suggest that many are travelling overseas to seek cheaper prices.
However, board member and cosmetic dentist Tif Qureshi cautioned: "You've got to be fairly happy to do some research and make sure that whoever you're going to see has a good portfolio of cases that they've actually done.
"You might need to speak to the patients or see some patients if you have to. It's very important to go to the dentist's website, see how many veneer cases they've done - or any of the procedures they've done - rather than just going with it on price," he advised.
Mr Qureshi noted that the BACD is not against dental tourism in principle, but emphasised that patients have "got to do their research properly".
