Patients reminded of medical tourism risks

18-Sep-2007

Medical tourism can be a safe and affordable way to have an operation, but patients should be aware of the potential risks associated with surgery, a private company has said.

A growing number of people are opting for cosmetic surgery with breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and face and neck lifts proving particularly popular.

Julie Russell, a spokeswoman for Surgery Abroad International, revealed that the company has an excellent track record and has "never had any problems with people going abroad for surgery".

"It should be noted that some people do tend to look at surgery abroad, especially when having cosmetic surgery, as either a holiday or a quick fix," she warned.

"It is important that people realise that realistically, unless having dental treatment, the probability of a 'holiday' following surgery will be nothing like the holiday we would normally have - e.g. if having a tummy tuck, you are not going to be able to go sight-seeing after your operation," she explained.

Ms Russell said that it is imperative for people to understand that cosmetic surgery is invasive and therefore carries the same risks as any other surgery.

She also urged patients to remain in the country of their choice for the immediate recovery period, aftercare and removal of any stitches.

According to the spokeswoman, people generally seek treatment abroad because of the cost savings, reduced risk of MRSA, hospital and surgeons' credentials and desire to avoid long UK waiting lists.

"Of course as with any type of surgery whether in the UK or abroad, there is always going to be an element of risk," she added.
