The number of overweight people in Brazil is, as in so many countries, growing. But many people are now taking action to increase weight loss.
According to Dr Roberto Rizzi, a specialist in obesity surgery, Brazil performs the second highest number of gastric bypass operations in the world.
The procedure limits the amount of food that can be consumed and digested and, in his opinion, is the safest form of weight-loss surgery, resulting in fewer complications than alternative options.
In an interview with www.gringoes.com, Dr Rizzi revealed that many foreigners are now visiting Brazil to undergo obesity surgery.
"Brazil offers modern, affordable and safe medical obesity surgery," he commented.
"Sao Paulo is considered to have some of the world's best equipped hospitals and highly skilled physicians.
"Also, the quality and reputation of surgeons in Brazil makes many foreigners decide to come to Brazil for this procedure."
Dr Rizzi added that the cost of obesity surgery is "significantly lower" in Brazil, providing an added incentive for foreigners to visit the country when considering obesity surgery.
