Treatments available at IVF Spain

Artificial insemination

Artificial insemination (AI) is a minimally-invasive technique whereby capacitated sperm is introduced into the uterus at the moment of ovulation. AI can be performed with sperm from a partner or donor sperm. Compared to IVF, AI has a low efficacy rate, however it may be suitable for:

  • Patients aged between 25 and 38 years
  • Where invasive procedures are counter-indicated
  • Male infertility
  • Irregular periods

Natural cycle IVF

Natural cycle IVF is simple method of IVF which is performed during the patient’s natural cycle or, occasionally using slight ovarian stimulation, in order to obtain 1 or 2 eggs which are then fertilised in the laboratory. It can be performed with sperm from a partner or with donor sperm and is suitable for:

  • Patients aged between 25 and 40 years
  • Patients with a good ovarian response
  • Patients with good expectations of success

Used to treat both male and female infertility, IVF treatment involves extracting and fertilising the egg with partner or donor sperm in the laboratory. The constant surveillance and control of multiple parameters required means that a successful outcome is greatly dependent on the quality of the laboratory and on the techniques used.  IVF is suitable for:

  • Patients aged between 30 and 42 years (with normal ovarian reserve)
  • Fallopian tube pathologies
  • Irregular periods
  • Male infertility
  • Artificial insemination failure
  • Patients who are at risk of transmitting a genetic or chromosomal alteration

Egg donation

Fertility treatment with donor eggs is approved by Spanish law. The law states that egg donation treatments have to be anonymous, which means that the child cannot obtain information concerning the donor and vice versa. The law also stipulates that both donor and recipient should share as many phenotypic characteristics as possible.

With a bank of 500 donors from all over Europe, Asia and the Middle East, IVF Spain is able to provide egg donation treatment for patients from across the world. Egg donation can be performed using sperm from a partner or with donor sperm (embryo adoption).  It is suitable for:

  • Women with early menopause
  • Women who do not produce enough eggs or are infertile as a result of chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments
  • Women who produce low quality eggs or who do not respond to hormones
  • In cases of persistent failure of other assisted reproduction treatments
  • Women who suffer from a genetic disease that cannot be diagnosed in the embryo
  • In cases where the ovaries are not accessible by means of surgery

Lesbian couple: ROPA method

The ROPA method is an increasingly popular reproductive solution for same-sex female couples as it gives both partners the opportunity to participate in the process. Also known as ‘Shared Motherhood’, the technique, which is permitted by law in Spain, consists of fertilising the egg of one partner with donor sperm and implanting the resulting embryo into the other partner's uterus. The identity and all information pertaining to both the conceived child and the donor are protected under Spanish law.

Social freezing

Social freezing or cryoconservation allows women to have control over when they would like to start a family, whether that be for social reasons such as postponing motherhood due to economic instability or medical reasons such as preserving eggs prior to cancer treatment.

For the best chance of pregnancy, it is recommended that women undergo regular examinations to ensure optimum reproductive health and start treatment before the age of 35. The more treatments a woman undergoes, the higher her chances of success.
