Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT)

Pre-implantation genetic testing screens for genetic conditions, allowing the healthiest embryo to be chosen for implantation. In contrast to traditional forms of IVF, the technique enables a single embryo to be transferred which is safest for both the mother and child.

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is used in cases where there is a known genetic condition such as thalassaemia or haemophilia. An advanced genetic technique called Karyomapping is used to select embryos free from genetic abnormalities.

Sunfert has a particular interest and expertise in screening for thalassaemia, a serious blood condition which mainly affects people of Mediterranean, South Asian, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern origin. Carriers of thalassaemia, although not affected by the disease themselves, are at risk of having a child with thalassaemia if their partner is also a carrier.

Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS)

Statistics show that 1 in 5 pregnancies end in miscarriage and more than 50% are due to chromosomal abnormalities. Chromosomal abnormalities also cause genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, Edward syndrome, Patau syndrome and Turner syndrome.

Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) involves a biopsy of a small number of cells from an embryo to test for chromosomal abnormalities using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. In this way, a single, healthy embryo with the best chance of implantation can be selected and transferred.

PGS is included in Sunfert’s NextGenIVF treatment package and is recommended for older couples, couples with a history of miscarriage or failed IVF, or couples who want to avoid multiple pregnancies while improving the chance of success.
