Obesity surgery

Optimed Hospital offers effective surgical weight loss solutions for people who are severely overweight and for whom traditional weight loss methods have been unsuccessful.

Also known as bariatric surgery (from baros, the ancient Greek word for weight), obesity surgery is designed to work in one of two ways – either to reduce the volume of the stomach and/or to limit the amount of calories that are absorbed. Suitable for patients aged between 18 and 65 who have an obesity problem of more than five years’ standing, the major benefit of the surgery lies in the reduction of the diseases associated with the condition and modern advances in surgical techniques have led to a significant reduction in the mortality rate.

Two methods of obesity surgery are provided at Optimed Hospital:

• Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy – surgical reduction of the size of the stomach to a sleeve-shaped tube thereby reducing the amount of food that can be eaten
• Laparoscopic SADI-S (Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy) – the latest technique in obesity surgery that also results in the immediate reversal of Type 2 diabetes

Contraindications

There are certain situations where obesity surgery may not be appropriate:

• In cases of severe eating disorders
• If there is an addiction to drugs, alcohol or stimulants
• If there is a serious systemic disease
• If there is a disease affecting the upper digestive tract
• If there is a need for the use of anti-inflammatory drugs
• If there is a hormonal or endocrine complaint
• If there is a serious psychiatric problem
• If pregnancy is planned within one year of surgery

Obesity surgery at Optimed Hospital

The expert team at the Optimed Bariatric Center carefully assess every patient’s needs to find the best surgical treatment in each individual case. Patients undergoing surgery stay in hospital for 2 to 3 days, and are able to stand up 4 hours post-surgery. Post-operative pain is minimal, passing within 1-2 days and can be easily controlled with simple painkillers.

Following surgery, patients are advised to follow a regular diet and exercise programme, and the success of surgery is related to compliance with this plan. All patients who comply lose weight effectively and the target weight is achieved within 1 to 1.5 years.

The diet and exercise programme also plays a vital role in preventing re-weight gain after surgery and in controlling obesity-related diseases. As a result, it is recommended that patients undergo regular check-ups and surveillance following surgery.

Anti-reflux surgery

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder that occurs when the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES), a ring a muscle between the oesophagus and stomach, is weak or relaxes inappropriately allowing the stomach contents to flow up into the oesophagus. Symptoms include a burning in chest (heartburn) sometimes spreading to the throat, bloating, chest pain, a dry cough and regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflux).Among the many causes of the condition are genetic factors, obesity, certain medications, the presence of co-existing chronic disease, smoking, alcohol, the consumption of oily, sweet and fermented foods, and excessive consumption of tea and coffee.

Optimed Hospital offers expert investigation and treatment for GERD. The disease can only be identified endoscopically and accurate diagnosis is important as the condition carries a 0.3% risk of developing into Barrett’s Oesophagus and oesophageal cancer.

The initial treatment options for GERD are medical therapy and diet, however if the patient does not tolerate the medication, or if there is severe damage and stenosis of the oesophagus or a sliding hiatus hernia, surgery is indicated.

The gold standard surgical treatment for GERD is floppy Nissen fundoplication, a laparoscopic procedure that takes approximately 30-45 to perform, with a success rate of 99% and very high patient satisfaction. Although very effective, the technique is highly specialist and should always be performed by an experienced surgeon.

Dr Serkan Ayhan

Bariatric surgery and anti-reflux procedures at Optimed Hospital are led by General Surgeon, Dr Serkan Ayhan, a specialist in Bariatric (Obesity & Metabolic) Surgery and Anti Reflux Surgery.

A graduate of Istanbul University Cerrahpasa Medical Faculty, Dr Ayhan has performed nearly 1000 obesity and anti-reflux operations and is actively involved in teaching and research having completed a thesis on obesity and reflux patients, as well as preparing a measurement report on the evaluation of pre- and post-operative conditions in patients.

Dr Ayhan is trained in laparoscopy, endoscopy and the latest open surgical techniques and, in addition to bariatric surgery, provides a comprehensive range of general surgery procedures including laparoscopic floppy Nissen fundoplication, the gold standard surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Aesthetic, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
