Fertility treatments available in Spain

Semen analysis

The Andrology Laboratory at CER SANTANDER performs any type of seminal studies necessary for the correct diagnosis of male infertility factor.

Spousal artificial insemination

Despite the prevalence of male or female infertility factor there are many situations where reproductive technology can overcome the problems experienced by a couple.

Artificial insemination with donor sperm

In situations where the male partner has no sperm or ejaculate, or other incompatibility exists, it may be necessary to use sperm from an anonymous donor.

In vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer

The technique involves subjecting the woman's ovary to follicular stimulation. Follicular puncture is performed under anaesthetic sedation and vaginal ultrasound. The follicular fluid obtained is evaluated by embryologists to extract viable eggs. The eggs are kept in the laboratory under specific environmental conditions before being inseminated with semen.

Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

ICSI is a variant of IVF in which each egg is microinjected with a single sperm under high magnification microscopy to improve their chances of fertilisation.

MESA / TESA

In cases where the epididymis does not contain any sperm, because of impaired sperm production, the method of TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) may be used. If necessary sperm may be retrieved by MESA (micro-epididymal sperm aspiration), which is performed under general anesthesia. These sperm obtained will be used later for an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis

PGD, or embryo screening, refers to procedures that are performed on embryos prior to implantation in order to screen for specific genetic disease.

Egg donation

There are some situations in which a woman cannot produce eggs, or the eggs are of poor quality, not yielding embryos capable of producing a pregnancy. In these situations, egg donation is the treatment of reproductive choice. Also some hereditary diseases of maternal origin and not solvable with preimplantation genetic diagnosis may be indicators of egg donation treatment.

Embryo adoption

This is the giving of embryos remaining after one couple's IVF treatment to another person or couple, followed by the placement of those embryos into the recipient woman's uterus to facilitate pregnancy and childbirth in the recipient

Assisted reproduction for homosexual couples

The Center for the Study of Reproduction (CER SANTANDER) offers fertility services for gay and lesbian couples.
