Overcoming infertility

Subfertility, defined as an inability to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse, affects around 10-15% of couples at some stage during their lives. It is advisable for couples who have spent a year trying to conceive without success to seek medical advice. This is particularly important for women who are aged 35 or above or who are aware of something in their medical history that might affect their fertility. Similarly, early medical advice is especially important where the husband is aware of a medical problem that might affect his fertility.

Cairo Fertility Clinic provides a comprehensive range of investigations and treatments for both male and female infertility, maximising the chance of pregnancy by providing state-of-the-art treatment under the safest and most professional conditions.

IVF and ICSI

Literally meaning ‘fertilisation in glass’, i.e. outside of the body, IVF is a process used to treat infertility that has failed to respond to other medical or surgical interventions. It can be used to treat infertility due to a number of causes such as where the fallopian tubes are blocked, absent or damaged, endometriosis, male factor fertility, unexplained infertility, complex ovulation problems, or a combination of infertility factors.

ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) is an infertility treatment performed as part of the IVF procedure in which a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. Representing a major breakthrough in the treatment of male factor infertility which is now known to be present in up to 45% of infertile couples, the procedure is most commonly recommended when the male partner has abnormal sperm parameters or is azoospermic. It is also recommended for couples who have failed to achieve fertilisation, or had very poor fertilisation, following standard IVF treatment.

Cairo Fertility Clinic provides both IVF and ICSI, carefully assessing each couple’s particular circumstances to offer the most appropriate treatment pathway.

Results

Success rates for IVF are dependent on a number of factors, including a women’s age, the cause and duration of the infertility and whether the woman has had any previous pregnancies. As a general rule, a couple embarking upon IVF/ICSI has a 1 in 3 chance of having a live birth with each attempt. Cairo Fertility Clinic does offer IVF to women up to the age of 45, however it is important to note that success rates with IVF treatment reduce dramatically after the age of 40.

Family balancing

The development of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) means that the gender of an embryo can be determined prior to implantation/pregnancy. This can be used to help parents achieve a ‘balanced family’, i.e. one with equal numbers of male and female children.

Cairo Fertility Clinic offers family balancing by means of PGD and IVF to couples who already have at least one child, and who would like to have another child of the non-represented (or underrepresented) gender. The programme is not available to couples looking to have their first child, or whose families already have equal numbers of boys and girls.
