Training and experience

Dr Ballian began his medical training in 1994 at the esteemed St. Bartholomew’s & The Royal London School of Medicine. In 1999, after 5 years of training at this globally recognised institute, he graduated with an MBBS and completed pre-registration house officer jobs at The Royal London Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Following his time spent in the UK training and gaining experience, Dr Ballian spent 6 months as Principal House Officer in Emergency Medicine at Ipswich Hospital, Queensland, Australia, a position accredited for surgical training by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

Having held medical roles in England, Scotland, Australia and Greece, Dr Ballian proudly went on to serve as physician at the 575 Marines Battalion for a year in Chalkida, Greece. After his time with the 575 Marines Battalion, he was appointed research fellow at the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. Dr.Ballian then refined his clinical expertise through 5-years of general surgery residency training at Johns Hopkins and the University of Wisconsin, where he graduated as chief resident in 2011.

During his time in the USA, Dr Ballian gained certification from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons in laparoscopic surgery. He passed written and oral examinations set out by the American Board of Surgery, and went on to receive further specialist training in esophageal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In the USA, Dr Ballian successfully conducted a number of oral presentations at national surgical meetings, published 14 peer reviewed articles as first author, and co-authored 4 book chapters.

Dr. Ballian’s private practice has been active in Athens, Greece since 2012. He uses only the most modern techniques in his treatments, and remains compliant with all continuing medical education requirements of the American Board of Surgery. Dr Ballian became Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 2015, a position that he still holds to this day.
