PROFILE

Every year more than 110,000 people from Spain and other countries worldwide go to the Instituto Oftalmolgico Fernndez-Vega in Oviedo, Asturias, to receive treatment for their eye conditions. All ophthalmological diseases are treated such as general ophthalmology, cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, corneal transplants, laser eye surgery, oculoplastics, contact lenses and refractive surgery for strabismus, retina and vitreous, queratoconus, keratoconus, uveitis, dry eye.

The Instituto Oftalmolgico Fernndez-Vega in Oviedo combines over 125 years of experience with the latest advances in research and treatment of eye diseases. The clinic has become a national and international reference in the field of ophthalmology due to the expertise of the team of highly qualified and experienced eye specialists, led by Professor Dr Luis Fernndez-Vega Sanz.

A family affair

It all started in 1886 when Adolfo Fernndez-Vega embarked on his ophthalmology training in Paris. Since then the practice has grown through the generations of the same family. In 1997 the Institute was created with the opening of a new centre to offer patients a comprehensive ophthalmology services, as well as a base supporting teaching and research. The institute owns the foundation 'Fundacin de Investigacin Oftalmolgica (FIO)' where more than 30 specialists are fully dedicated to the investigation of ophthalmological pathologies.

The Institute occupies 13000 square metres. Equipped with the latest technology it has more than 60 examination rooms for ophthalmologists and optometrists, as well as additional rooms for preoperative examinations, diagnostic tests and specific treatments (Orbscan units, OCT, Retinography, Ultrasound Scanning, IOL biometry, Campimetry, etc).

The Surgical Center includes eight operating rooms with the latest high technology equipment and instruments, including facoemulsification and femtolaser equipment for cataract surgery, vitrectomy units for the posterior pole, endophotocoagulation solid state laser, KTP laser for the retina, anesthesia units, latest generation excimer lasers, femtosecond lasers for cornea surgery, as well as other equipment and instruments.

There is also a hospitalisation floor with thirteen individual rooms, including two suites.
