One of Belgium’s first private specialist eye clinics, Eyecenter Latem in St-Martens Latem near Ghent was established in 2007 by ophthalmologist Dr MD Fernand De Wilde. Equipped with the latest technology and staffed by an experienced and extensively trained team of professionals, the centre offers treatment for a wide range of ocular issues, including cataracts and macular degeneration, and provides corrective procedures such as laser eye refractive surgery (Smile), eyelid correction surgery (CO2 laser) and clear lens exchange (Catalys laser).
The majority of eye surgeries and procedures are carried out in the operating room of Eyecenter Latem’s modern premises which is equipped with a sterile air (laminar air flow) conditioning unit, ensuring the safest of conditions. Services such as therapy for cataract and retinal issues, laser eye surgery, eyelid surgery and glaucoma treatment are also available at Eyecenter’s new practice, Eyecenter Eeklo in Eeklo.

The team at Eyecenter comprises 3 highly regarded ophthalmologists, 4 optometrists and a medical photographer supported by friendly and welcoming reception staff. With an emphasis on customer care and accessibility, they are committed to providing an efficient, specialist service in a peaceful and professional atmosphere.
Whilst they all enjoy a strong reputation in the field of general ophthalmology, each of Eyecenter’s ophthalmologists has a sub-specialism. These range from measurement of visual acuity, through specialist digital fluoroangiography to laser treatments for diabetic patients and eyelid corrections with carbon dioxide laser. Dr De Wilde specialises in cataract , clear lens extraction and refractive eye surgery.
Cataract surgery by means of phacoemulsification is one of the most common medical procedures performed, with the highest success rate. Following a comprehensive eye examination, the cloudy lens is broken up using ultrasound waves and replaced with an artificial lens in a totally painless procedure lasting 10-15 minutes. Local anaesthesia is administered in the form of eye drops.
Cataract surgery takes place at St Lucas University Hospital in Ghent and is performed on an outpatient basis.
Suitable for patients from the age of 45 upwards, Prelex stands for ‘presbyopic lens exchange’ and involves replacing the natural lens of the eye with a progressive (multifocal) to restore both long and short-distance sight. Multifocal toric implant lenses that correct both long and short-sightedness and even astigmatism with the same implant are also available. These procedures are carried out with the Catalys laser. This infrared laser makes the operation safer and even more precise than it was before. No more need for a blade, the capsule is opened with the laser and the lens is fragmented into small pieces. The surgeon will than aspirate the lens fragments and inject the premium implant.
Eyecenter offers treatment for the full range of refractive eye disorders including short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism using an excimer and femtolaser. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis at the Belgian Ocular Laser Centre (BOLC) in Drongen, Belgium.
Eyecenter’s ophthalmologists have been performing LASIK procedures using a femtosecond laser (bladeless surgery) since 2007. Since 2013 all procedures are performed with the newest “Smile“ method. In Smile a lenticule is taken out of the cornea corresponding to your degree of myopia and only one laser, the femtosecond laser is used. There is no more need for a flap, the rigidity of the cornea is preserved and there are no more dry eye issues because the entrance port is only 2mm. Smile is the new paradigm in refractive corneal surgery.
Past the age of 40, the natural lens in the eye becomes less elastic, leading to reading problems and the need for glasses. Eyecenter provides three modern and permanent solutions for presbyopia: Prelex (presbyopic lens exchange) with the Catalys laser; Laserblended vision (LBV) laser correction with the Mel-90; and corneal inlay.
Eyecenter’s skilled eye surgeons provide correction of eye bags and excess skin near the upper eyelid using a CO2 laser. They also treat lower eyelid bags with an orbicularis suspension approach.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive condition in which central vision is lost meaning that reading becomes difficult, people’s faces are difficult to recognise and colours appear less vibrant. It is one of the main causes of poor vision in older patients.
Eyecenter offers a combination of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and the latest intravitreal injections (Avastin, Eylea and Lucentis) to counter the new formation of blood vessels. Recent research has shown that this combination of products provides the best chance of success, enabling patients who had difficulty reading to be able to see close up once more.
