State-of-the-art radiotherapy

Atrys oncologists were pioneers in the use and establishment of hypofractionated radiotherapy techniques in Europe. Their physicians have a broad experience in the use of state-of-the-art treatments. Atrys’s oncology centres are equipped with the most advanced radiotherapy treatments such as Image Guided Single Dose Radiation Therapy (SD-IGRT) and hypofractionated radiotherapy.

SD-IGRT allows high doses of radiation to be delivered very precisely, greatly reducing the impact on healthy tissues. The treatment can be delivered in a single session and subject to specialist consultation can be used to remove a tumour at an early stage, providing new therapy options for patients who are unable to undergo surgery or who do not have other effective treatments available to them.

Extreme Hypofractionated radiotherapy is an advanced technique that is increasingly being used to treat a range of cancers. During hypofractionation, more intensity of radiation is delivered per session, so a lower number of sessions (2-5) are needed allowing patients to complete their course of radiation therapy more quickly with the possibility of fewer short term side effects and a better quality of life.

External radiotherapy

External radiotherapy utilises high-energy rays produced by a linear accelerator, which are directed from outside of the body precisely towards a tumour. It is generally used either to eliminate cancer or in cases that require prevention of a recurrence. It can also be used as a palliative treatment to alleviate difficult symptoms caused by the presence of metastasis or advanced cancer.

External radiotherapy treatments available at Atrys are:

  • Conventional External Radiotherapy
    - 3D Radiotherapy
    - IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy)
  • Advanced External Radiotherapy
    - Frameless fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery
    - IGRT (Image-guided radiotherapy)
    - VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy)
    - SBRT. Extracranial radiosurgery
    - SD-IGRT/SRS
    - 4D Radiotherapy

Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is a type of radiation therapy in which a small radioactive material called a source is placed inside the body, inside or close to the cancer. It is commonly used for prostate cancer, both as a low dose monotherapy in cases where the tumour is limited to the prostate and as a high dose in combination with radiotherapy and/or hormone therapy treatment.

The radiation dose in prostate brachytherapy is confined to the gland and does not affect neighbouring organs. The technique has several advantages: it avoids invasive surgery, is placed only once, allows a rapid recovery, avoids urinary incontinence and allows sexual drive to be maintained in more than 90% of cases.

Brachytherapy is also used in cases of breast cancer, gynaecological cancers and eye cancers.

Brachytherapy treatments available are:

  • HDR Gynaecological cancers
  • HDR Prostate Cancer
  • HDR Brachytherapy with Ir-192 source
  • Prostate brachytherapy with I-125 seeds
  • Ophthalmic brachytherapy with RU-106 applicators or with I-125 seeds

Second opinion and genetic counselling

Atrys provides second opinion oncology consultations for people diagnosed with cancer who want to get a second opinion from an expert team and discuss treatment options. They also provide genetic counselling for people who are suffering from cancer or who have a family history of the condition.
