The bone marrow is a spongy tissue found in the centre of some bones, it is responsible for producing the body's blood cells. Bone marrow may need to be replaced for a number of reasons, including treating genetic conditions such as sickle cell anaemia, aplastic anaemia and leukaemia. Transplants take healthy stem cells from either a donor or a second site within the patient and transfer them to the depleted bone.
