Dentists in Poland : Accreditation and qualifications

In Poland, the path to becoming a dental surgeon involves long and intense study. After secondary school, five years of study in medical school must be completed to qualify as a dentist, the last two years being a type of apprenticeship where students work with real patients while being observed by experienced surgeons to gain first-hand experience in the field.

After studying, and in order to practise as a dentist in Poland, all dentists have to be registered with The Polish Chamber of Physicians and Dentists. This is a professional, self-governing organisation, whose main aim is to enhance the prestige of Polish physicians and dental practitioners in society. Membership of the chamber is mandatory for all physicians and dental practitioners wishing to practise medicine or dentistry in Poland.

Practising as a dentist

In addition, after qualifying and in order to be able to practise, a dentist in Poland must also obtain a 'permit’ known in Polish as Prawo Wykonywania Zawodu, and this also applies to doctors. To obtain this permit the candidate must appear in front of a commission. The permit gets renewed every five years and if the period is longer than five years, then the dentist has to take additional exams to be able to appear again in front of the commission and get another permit.

A system of compulsory post-graduate education has been introduced recently in Poland, along similar lines to the CPD (Continuous Professional Development) system which applies to dentists in the UK. A dentist in Poland has to gain a certain number of points each year to be able to continue to practise; these points are usually gained by attending accredited courses.

After qualifying, Polish dentists can go on to specialise in areas such as oral surgery, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry and these courses of study are long and difficult and rank very highly among European dental qualifications, and are organised by the Centre for Medical Postgraduate Education (CMKP).

Many dentists in Poland belong to the PTS, the Polish Dental Society, although membership is not compulsory.
