Cosmetic surgery in Hungary : Doctor accreditation and qualifications

In order to practise, surgeons and dentists must obtain a governmental certificate and must be named on the door of their surgery.

The State National Health Commission and Medical Service is the equivalent of our Health Care Commission in the UK.  The Chief Medical Officer is the head and oversees all healthcare providers and assesses the quality in each clinic and hospital. All doctors have to be members of the Hungarian Medical Chamber in order to practice. (Web sites only in Hungarian at present.)

If you are considering cosmetic or plastic surgery in Hungary, you may want to check the surgeon's accreditation with the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

In Hungary all cosmetic surgeons must be qualified and experienced general surgeons before they can specialise in cosmetic surgery, so a cosmetic surgeon will know everything about being a surgeon as well as their specialist field, which is secondary.

First they must study for a diploma at medical university which takes six years and after passing their final examination they take surgery training at a clinic or hospital for atleast six years (depending on what kind of surgery they wish to specialise in).  Afterwards, they take another exam before gaining their diploma qualifying them to be a general surgeon.  But the training is not over yet - as they must undertake further training and another exam before achieving a diploma which allows them to practise cosmetic surgery, which takes three years.

To enter the programme of training you need to meet strict entrance criteria and general surgeons and their qualifications are vetted and scrutinised by two separate committees before being allowed to train in plastics.

Furthermore following your three years of training and passing the final consultant examination, you are not allowed to operate without senior plastics surgeon supervision for another five years.  Therefore (if there are no gaps in training) it takes a staggering 20 years (6+6+3+5) before you can call yourself a consultant plastic surgeon.
