Accreditation and qualification of cosmetic surgeons and doctors in Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic cosmetic surgery is strictly controlled and surgeons are highly qualified, with many years of experience in cosmetic and aesthetic surgery.  The title Doctor of Medicine (Medicinae Universae Doctor - MUDr.) is given to graduates from a Medical Faculty after studying for six years. This title allows a graduate to practice medicine in a hospital as an assistant physician (resident) or in an outpatient establishment under the supervision of another qualified doctor.

Postgraduate medical education is based on a two-step specialisation - the compulsory first degree of specialisation for every doctor practicing medicine and the second specialisation degree that is mandatory only for physicians in leading positions.  Surgeons need to be licensed and certified to perform surgery in the Czech Republic.

Professional bodies

Professional bodies include the Czech Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (CSAS), which assures the provision of quality care and surgical performance by qualified surgeons and only admits fully qualified plastic surgeons.  It is linked to international organisations with similar interests such as the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) and the International Confederation of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (IPRAS).

Membership and certification by the CSAS represents a high level of expertise and is awarded only to surgeons with guaranteed competence and involved in the continuing education in aesthetic surgery.  The CSAS also works in association with The Czech Medical Association of JE Purkyne (CLS JEP), a voluntary association for professionals in the health care sector and the Czech Medical Chamber (CMC) which is the independent, non-political autonomous professional organisation which looks after the interests, professionalism, ethics and honour of the medical profession.

The Czech Medical Chamber has ultimate responsibility for medical quality while the Czech Ministry of Health is the governmental body which oversees general conditions and appeals cases of malpractice.
