Smart Test technology is new hope for oncology patients

A Smart Test that increases a patient’s life expectancy without the side effects of chemotherapy is now available at Antalya Training and Research Hospital in Turkey. The method is suitable for use on skin cancers, colorectal cancers, lung cancers and malignant melanomas.

At Antalya Training and Research Hospital, Associate Professor of Oncology, Dr Banu Öztürk and his colleague Associate Professor Dr Cem Sezer lead a multidisciplinary cancer team comprising surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, invasive radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists, all working together under one roof.

Patients visiting the centre initially undergo non-invasive and invasive diagnostic procedures (including biopsy, CT scans, 18F-FDG PET-CT and other methods) carried out by experienced specialists. Then, in the molecular pathology department, which is validated by international pathology associations, tumour specimens are analysed for oncogenes such as K-ras, N-ras and B-raf mutations, EGFR mutation analysis, EML/ALK rearrangements, BRCA mutations and haematological translocations (etc. t(14;18), t(9;22), 13q1del, jak2 mutations), Her2/neu amplifications.

An individualised treatment protocol can then be constructed following analysis of the tumour specimen, for example if the specimen is positive for EGFR mutation or ALK rearrangement, a patient with advanced non-small cell lung cancer can survive for a long time solely with the use of a single medication. Similarly, nearly one third of breast cancer patients are found to have Her2 amplification and there are many anti-Her2 treatment strategies. By using these treatments, a patient with Her2 amplification at advanced stage can have more time to progression and overall survival time.

In addition to the latest molecular treatments, Antalya Training and Research Hospital has a modern chemotherapy unit equipped with fully automated, robotic systems that calculate chemotherapy dosages with utmost precision. The chemotherapy is administered by experienced nurses using closed system transfer devices.

The hospital’s extensively equipped pathology centre has the most advanced diagnostic tools for solid tumours and haematological malignancies. Its internationally validated molecular pathology department works on individualised cancer treatments; tumour specimens can be investigated for critical oncogenes for several tumours such as breast and colorectal cancers, and malignant melanoma. Haematological translocations (etc. t(14;18), t(9;22), 13q1del, jak2 mutations) can be analysed for leukaemia and lymphomas.
