Surprise birthday party for obesity surgeon, Dr Burhan Mayir

80 patients who had undergone sleeve gastrectomy at Antalya Training and Research Hospital in Turkey recently teamed up to organise a surprise birthday party for Op. Dr Burhan Mayir at Antalya Atatürk Park.

One grateful patient, Mr İsmail P. lost 82kg in 10 months. He said, “I was suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure and I had pain in my bones and my back all the time and also could not walk and breathe comfortably. I left all these problems behind. I can cycle, walk and shop myself without help now. My friends could not recognize me after 10 months.”

Another organiser of the birthday party, Mrs Şükriye Ş. used to be a cook. She explained, “I had to leave my job because of obesity. Not only did I find it difficult to stand for long hours, but I was also struggling to breathe comfortably. I was told that I was at risk of paralysis. I decided to take the chance and have the operation. My daughter did not agree with me. I have lost 70 kg after the operation in one year. I am happy now. Many thanks to Dr Mayir and the hospital staff.”

Dr Mayir said, “Social organisations increase the motivation of patients to lose weight. And they can share their problems with each other and try to sort them out by finding common solutions.

I am very grateful and honoured for my birthday party. Nice to see my patients all happy and well-motivated.”
