What are the health benefits of thermal spas?

The healing properties of the mineral water in hot springs have been recognised for thousands of years and their use as a natural treatment is widely accepted in many European countries, including Hungary, France, Switzerland, Germany and Slovenia. The study of the treatment of disease by means of bathing in hot springs is known as balneology.

Terme Portoroz, situated right on the Slovenian coast is part of the holistic LifeClass Hotels & Spa resort. It is the only thermal spa in Slovenia that offers five registered natural healing elements originating from the local environment: microclimate, brine, therapeutic mud (fango), sea water and 42,000 year-old thermal water. The priceless thermal water, known as the Prehistoric Sea, is obtained from the warm water springs located at a depth of 724 m below the surface. Naturally 23° Celsius at source, the water is then heated up to 30 °Celsius. This sulphide mineral water is used for illness prevention and healing of different health issues, such as the healing of joints and muscles, treatment and prevention of skin and hypodermis issues, improvement of the immune, lymphatic and respiratory systems, prevention and healing of gynaecological problems and for detox of body and mind in general.

The salt chamber of Thalasso Center at Terme Portoroz represents a unique added element to the spa and can be used for prevention of respiratory system infections and allergies. The Pearl Sea Baths and therapeutic mud wraps help eliminate any muscle pain and excess water, as well as improving skin condition and general health.

Terme Portoroz’s Medical Center offers comprehensive rehabilitation programmes aimed at recovery following injury and orthopaedic surgery, management of inflammatory and degenerative rheumatic diseases and the amelioration of skin diseases. The medical approach is based on multidisciplinary healing methods, the 800-year old healing tradition of spa medicine and modern diagnostic technology. The professional medical team led by thermal therapy physician and balneologist, dr. med. Lepa Veljanovic provides preventive health programmes, the assessment of bone density, muscle strength and joint mobility, laboratory testing, electrotherapy, manual- and mechanotherapy, as well as counselling.

Terme Portoroz also houses the Center for Aesthetics and Anti-aging, which implements non-invasive aesthetic approaches in order to rejuvenate and slow down the natural aging processes. In addition to the modern aesthetic treatments for facial and body rejuvenation, such as anti-aging plasma treatment and maderotherapy, clients can take advantage of laser treatments against skin and vascular changes, removal of unwanted hair, aesthetic acupuncture and winkle correction with dermal fillers.
