Cryotherapy

What is it?

In spa terminology Cryotherapy means the application of a very cold or frozen compress to treat muscles and joints which are sore or fatigued after physical exertion (not be confused with the radiologic-based cryotherapy technique which is used in the treatment of cancer).  Historically, and until artificial packs were created, Cryotherapy was only available in countries with plenty of snow and ice.

How does it work?

As a spa treatment the stimulating effect of extremely low temperatures is achieved using liquid nitrogen which causes a defensive reaction on the body.  After two to three minutes the compress gives a painkilling, swelling reducing and anti inflammatory result.

What does it treat?

It is beneficial for osteoporosis, rheumatism, back pain, and cellulite.  Ice packs help reduce fevers, treat the pain of arthritis, gout and control infections.

Which countries offer this treatment?

  • Czech Republic

  • Poland

  • Hungary

  • Slovak Republic
