Laser eye surgery, cataract removal, and eye lid surgery in Turkey

Laser eye surgery

Laser surgery involves using lasers (narrow beams of light) to remould the tissue of the cornea (the transparent layer of tissue at the front of the eye) to change its curve. The treatment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

There are three different types of laser surgery:

  • photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)
  • laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK)
  • laser in situ keratectomy (LASIK)

Cataracts

Cataracts are removed using surgery. If you have cataracts in both eyes, you will have surgery on them on separate occasions. This gives the first eye time to heal and your vision time to return. Most cataract operations are performed using keyhole surgery, which means that only a very small incision (cut) is made.

Eye lid surgery (oculoplastics)

Plastic surgery around eye lids include the repair of droopy eyelids (blepharoplasty), tear duct obstructions, orbital fractures, removal of tumours in and around the eyes, removal of excessive skin or fat around eye lids and facial rejuvenation including laser skin resurfacing, eye lifts, brow lifts, and even facelifts.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs when the drainage tubes (trabecular meshwork) within the eye become slightly blocked. This prevents eye fluid (aqueous humour) from draining properly. When the fluid cannot drain properly, pressure builds up. This is called intraocular pressure. This can damage the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain, and the nerve fibres from the retina (the light-sensitive nerve tissue that lines the back of the eye).

Corneal transplantation

A corneal transplant (or keratoplasty) is an operation used to remove a damaged cornea and replace it with healthy corneal tissue from the eye of a suitable donor. A corneal transplant can improve sight and relieve pain in a damaged or diseased eye.

Squint (strabismus)

A squint is the misalignment of the eye caused by an incorrect balance of the eye muscles. Squints are common and affect about one in 20 children. They usually develop during the first three years of life, but can appear later. A squint is often spotted in early childhood, sometimes within weeks of a baby being born.

The Blue Mosque - Istanbul

Longevita clinics provide medical treatment in Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya – Turkey’s largest coastal cosmopolitan cities

Istanbul

The only city in the world built on two continents stretching along the two shores of the Bosporus that links the Marmara Sea with the Black Sea. At every turn in the city, you face Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman palaces, mosques, churches, monasteries, monuments, walls and ruins. Bazaars and ultra-modern shopping centres offer both traditional and modern shopping to visitors. Excellent restaurants, lively bars, finest luxurious hotels located on the Bosphorus with stunning views over the straits, or in the modern business districts, contribute to Istanbul's cosmopolitan feel.

Izmir

The city home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The legendary female warriors, the Amazons, founded Izmir, or Smyrna as it was called in Ancient Times, according to one story. It boasts both natural spas with healing thermal waters, and the deep blue sea with beaches running for 101 km on the Aegean coastal strip. As a lively and cosmopolitan city, it has a significant place in Turkey's cultural life with the International Arts Festival and International Fair.

Antalya

Antalya

The Turkish Riviera is the most stunning part of Turkey's Mediterranean coast. The city has a backdrop of fascinating mountain scenery, and is set high on cliffs, with many of its grandest hotels overlooking the sea on the outskirts of the town. A historic heart in the centre with old city walls, the city has seen something of a renaissance in recent years, with many of the wooden Ottoman mansions being restored and turned into boutique hotels. The beach area is known for its golden sand. Heading up into the mountains, one can make the most of the beautiful scenery by visiting the spectacular waterfalls. Just 50 km away from the city centre, one can even ski, where it is snowy on the slopes until early April. The Golden Orange film festival is held annually in the autumn.
