Treatments offered

 Refractive errors

Laser surgery

Refractive errors are corrected by applying the laser to the intermediate layer of the cornea, the stroma, reducing the tissue in order to change the curvature of the cornea. This operation is performed with a local anaesthetic, administered with eye-drops, as an outpatient intervention and only takes a few minutes.

Currently the technique that is most often used is LASIK due to its precision and safety. The operation is also painless and patients recover their vision very quickly.

They also perform surface treatment LASEK and PRK, for patients whom this treatment is suitable.

Wavefront-guided customised laser surgery

With the new wavefront technology aspects like night vision, the ability to differentiate between shades of colour or brightness and resistance to glare can be improved.

Vistalaser - eye treatment

Wavefront technology allows visual performance to be analysed by measuring optical aberrations - the distortions and irregularities of the eye.  Laser treatment is adjusted according to these findings. Because this allows specific treatment to be designed for each eye the quality of your sight can be improved in terms of sensitivity to contrast, night vision, glare etc.

Surgery for high level Myopia and Hyperopia

Using a local anaesthetic, an intraocular lens (made out of an acrylic material) is implanted in the eye. The operation does not hurt and the patient may return home after the intervention but the eye must be covered until the following morning.

In cases where there is astigmatism as well as myopia or hyperopia, the lens implant can be complemented by treating with the laser afterwards. The results obtained with this method are remarkably precise.

Cataract surgery

Phacoemulsification, the most modern technique for treating cataracts, uses ultrasound to break down and extract the lens.  An intraocular lens is then inserted through a tiny incision of about 3 mm. This artificial lens will not only replace the original lens, but can also compensate for any myopia or hyperopia that the patient had before the operation.

This is an outpatient intervention that does not require hospitalisation. The operation takes about 20 minutes and is carried out with a local anaesthetic. Once the intervention is over patients may return home and their vision will recover very quickly.

Surgery for obstruction in the tear duct

Dacryocystorhinostomy is recommended for the treatment of watery eyes caused by an obstruction in the tear duct. This modern surgical technique is a significant advance on traditional methods because:

  • It doesn't leave any scarring on the patient’s face.

  • It is an outpatient procedure performed with a local anaesthetic.

  • Patients recover quickly after the operation and the actual intervention itself only takes 30 minutes.

A patient's journey

Before surgery

Before arriving in Spain, patients must stop wearing their contact lenses for at least a week if they are soft lenses or two weeks if they are hard or gas permeable lenses. Patients must also stop wearing make-up for 3 days before surgery.

Preoperative consultation

The preoperative examination can be carried out the day before the operation. Vistalaser oftalmologia operates on Wednesdays and Fridays in Málaga and on Thursdays in Marbella. Patients should be aware that as a result of this examination you might not be considered suitable for surgery.

Postoperative examination

The day after the operation, patients must attend a postoperative examination. A minimum stay of 3 days is, therefore, necessary for this first stage.

Between five and ten days later patients have a second postoperative check-up which can be done at Vistalaser oftalmologia or in your own country.

If necessary, they can assist your usual eye doctor to carry out the postoperative follow-up either over the telephone or by email.  Your doctor will also be provided with a full medical report.

Price for laser surgery of refractive errors are 2000 Euros for both eyes (approximately 1550 Pounds for both eyes).

Latest technology

The Allegretto Laser 400 Hertz EYE-Q is currently the fastest in the world and delivers 400 laser pulses of nine millimetres in diameter per second. The Eye Tracker system monitors the position of the eye 250 times per second using infrared cameras which pass information to the computer that controls the laser so that it follows even the smallest movements of the eye. This means that the treatment is always perfectly centred.

The aberrometer which analyses optical irregularities is used as both a diagnostic aid and during the operation to guide the laser.  It divides the field of vision into 64 segments and by examining these different subsections the precise degree of correction that is necessary for each one can be analysed.

By using these cutting edge of laser technology, the treatment given by Vistalaser oftalmologia to each of their patients is unique and personalised, allowing them to achieve results which are superior to those obtained with standard treatments.
