Eyelid surgery in Belgium: Treatments offered

  • Blepharoplasty

A cosmetic eyelid procedure that can correct your drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes. These conditions may make you look tired or older.
  • Ectropion

An abnormal lower eyelid that turns outward and no longer touches the eye.
  • Entropion

An inwardly turned or inverted eyelid.  Although it can involve both upper and lower eyelids, the lower eyelid is more frequently affected.

  • Ptosis

Is present when the upper eyelid is lower than normal. The ptosis can be minimal and is hardly visible but the drooping eyelid can also completely cover the pupil and can obstruct normal vision.
  • Skin cancer of the eyelids

The most common type of skin cancer, Basal-cell carcinoma, rarely spreads but is still considered malignant as it can cause significant tissue destruction and invade surrounding tissue. On the eyelids, skin cancer most often occurs on the lower eyelid and usually appears as painless nodules. However, if ulcers appear, then carcinoma should be suspected.  Only a biopsy can confirm the diagnosis, but it is preferable to remove the whole nodule and to do a reconstruction in a one procedure, rather than performing a biopsy, and then removing the nodule and performing a reconstruction in a separate procedure.

Unique surgical treatment for dry eyes in Belgium

Miro oculoplastic surgery - eyelid surgery

Dry eyes are one of the most frequent problems in patients over 50 years old, although even younger patients can suffer from dry eyes. Artificial tears or gels provide a partial or temporary solution.

However, when conventional treatments for very dry eyes fail Dr. Raus’ technique of transplanting the labial salivary glands to the inner side of the eyelids promises to be an excellent alternative.

This surgical technique was developed by Prof. Juan Murube, from the famous Alcalá University of Madrid in Spain, and modified by Dr Peter Raus by using radiosurgery and a running suture rather than separate ones.

With the patient under general anaesthesia, a specimen of labial mucous membrane of the lower lip and the underlying glands is removed and transplanted to the inner, conjunctival side of the eyelid. The patient need only stay in the hospital for one night, and the stitches can be removed after two weeks.

When the stitches are removed, most patients notice an immediate improvement, and are able to reduce artificial tear treatment.
