The Philippines is a growing health tourism destination. Made up of 7,100 islands and islets and located off the south east coast of Asia nestled between Taiwan (north) and Borneo (south) with the Western Pacific Ocean and South China Sea bordering its eastern and western limits, the Philippines is a fascinating and exotic country for the dental tourist to visit.
The country has a rich and diverse history with Asian, European, and American influences. The national language is Filipino but as the third largest English speaking country in the world it’s reassuring to know that although you’re in the Far East you won’t have any problem being understood, especially as Filipino people are warm, welcoming and sociable people.
The capital of the Philippines is Manila which is a bustling city with a mishmash of cultures merging together and after three centuries of Spanish rule and 48 years of American government they are a predominantly Christian nation. There’s plenty going on in this exciting city to occupy the visitor, including regular musical and cultural performances, discovering the country’s rich historical tapestry in the architecture, museums, cathedral and churches, and then there’s the shopping. Dedicated bargain hunters can purchase quality items such as Mother of Pearl, Coral, South Sea Pearls, Terracotta and Porcelain at very good prices or shop till they drop in the capital’s enormous shopping malls and sample an array of tantalising Filipino food, which is a fusion of Oriental, European and American culinary influences.
The Philippines is also home to some top beaches, and the world famous islands of Boracay and Camiguin with hot springs and picture perfect beaches. Some of the private dental institutions offer a full dental tourism package which includes flights, accommodation and sometimes a golfing or spa retreat style holiday.
Many of the dentists in the Philippines are western trained, often studying and gaining further expertise in the US and Japan. Medical technologies are advanced and private hospitals and clinics have state-of-the-art facilities. Excellent savings can be made; the cost of a laminate veneer crown (ceramic) in the UK for example is around £550, but atThe Sacred Heart Dental Clinic in Manila this will cost just £101. Tooth whitening (upper and lower jaws) costs approximately £950 in the UK, but only £187 in the Philippines. Root canal treatment (one canal) typically costs £100 in the UK, and just £53 in the Philippines and dental implants only £186.
The Philippines is a tropical country and the climate between March and May is hot and dry. The rainy season is between June and October so the best time to visit is between November and February when the weather is cooler. So, with real savings to be made on quality dentistry treatment and a warm Filipino hospitality, the Philippines is a colourful and vibrant country just waiting to be explored and a definite consideration for your dentistry abroad.
